FCS Playoffs: The Grand Art Of Compromise

PHILADELPHIA, PA. — If I lived in the world of science fiction, how fun would it be to transform into a fly on the wall as the NCAA Division I Football Committee do their playoff deliberations each year in Indianapolis, IN?
This weekend would have been a good time for such a feat, considering the questions that arose from the selection of the 2011 Football Championship Subdivision field.
Inquiring minds around the country want to know how Eastern Kentucky managed to slip into the field when the Colonels were not on the radar of hardly anyone before Sunday's selection show on ESPNU.

PHILADELPHIA, PA. — At the FCS level, college football fans like to picture their pristine subdivision free of the political wrangling that seems to dominate the headlines in the BCS, with its crazy computer polls and politicking for position.
They groan about the inordinate influence TV has on the outcomes of the bowls, and moan that some team in a conference deserved to be in a particular bowl, and another team was unfairly shut out.
But after seeing the shock of the final team in the FCS Playoff field this weekend, I think it's time to revise FCS college football fans' thinking of the selection process.
For television and politics seem to be very much present as well in FCS in terms of the selection process - as fans of 7-4 Illinois State discovered to their detriment.

Back To The Future, FCS Edition

PHILADELPHIA, PA. — This time of the year there are a lot of people who suddenly think of themselves as Football Championship Subdivision prognosticators.
Everyone wants to pick the 20 teams that will be in the field and take their turn at making a dream bracket. It's like playing Fantasy Football.
But viewing the work of the NCAA Division I Football Committee is a bit like reading Supreme Court precedents. If you want to know what the committee will do this year, look at what it has done in the past.
