HUNTSVILLE, TX— Monmouth scored 15 unanswered fourth-quarter points and had a chance to take the lead with under a minute to play, but could noy close out #4 seeded Sam Houston (7-0) on Saturday in the First Round of the 2020-21 FCS Playoffs.

Trailing 21-0 heading into the final quarter the Hawks scored on back to back drives then forced a stop to get the ball back with 4:20 left in the game. Down by six the Hawks went to work from their own 25. Monmouth QB Tony Muskett drove the Hawks down to the Sam Houston nine yard line, but on fourth down junior Bearkat Isaiah Downes came up with an interception on fourth and goal with 48 seconds left to preserve the victory.

RB Ramon Jefferson had touchdown runs of 56 and three yards to lead the Sam Houston offense with 98 yards on nine carries. WR Cody Crest accounted for the Bearkats’ other score, a 13-yard pass from QB Eric Schmid, who was 12 for 24 for 133 yards passing.

Monmouth outgained the Bearkats 398-257 but Sam Houston’s defense made it difficult for the Hawks to break open large chunks of yardage on explosive plays. Muskett tied a career-high with 297 yards with a touchdown and his first two career interceptions. Big South Offensive Player of the Yea Juwon Farri had 25 carries for 98 yards and a touchdown while Terrance Greene Jr. led the receiving effort with nine receptions for 94 yards and a score.
